Afrobeats superstar Davido has opened up about the story behind his collaboration with fellow singer Omah Lay, revealing that the partnership was sparked by a simple misunderstanding.
Omah Lay had previously admitted that he once believed Davido disliked him, an assumption that changed after the DMW boss played his song during a popular livestream with American streamer Kai Cenat in Lagos. The unexpected shoutout quickly caught fans’ attention and led Omah Lay to express his surprise publicly on social media.
Speaking in a trending video, Davido explained that he decided to reach out to Omah Lay after seeing his tweet. According to him, the moment presented an opportunity to clear the air and connect directly.
Davido recounted that the situation began while he was driving Kai Cenat to a club in Lagos when one of Omah Lay’s songs started playing. When Kai asked who the artist was, Davido praised Omah Lay’s talent. The following day, Omah Lay tweeted about the shoutout, admitting he had thought Davido disliked him. Davido said he immediately sent him a direct message, questioning why he would think that, especially since they had never met.
The conversation soon led to the exchange of phone numbers and several studio sessions. The two artists reportedly recorded about four songs together, eventually settling on “With You” as their official release.
“With You” has since emerged as one of the standout tracks on Davido’s fifth studio album, 5ive, and has gone on to earn a nomination for Best African Music Performance at the 2026 Grammy Awards, marking a major milestone for both artists.
