“Don’t Sing for Power”: Angelique Kidjo Warns Musicians Against Making Music for Politicians

Legendary Beninese singer and multiple Grammy Award winner Angelique Kidjo has shared some powerful words of wisdom for fellow musicians — urging them to stay true to their art and avoid being used as tools for political propaganda.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Female Poets Society podcast, Kidjo cautioned artists against creating music to praise or promote politicians or political parties. According to her, political power is temporary, but music should stand the test of time.

“My father always used to say to us, especially to me as a singer, do not write music for any political party because they come and they go, and once they’re gone, you go with it,” Kidjo recalled.

She emphasized that musicians should use their platforms to speak for the people, not for those in power.

“Write your music with your opinions, be free writing your music. Don’t be sold to somebody because therefore, you don’t become the voice of the people anymore, you become the voice of the power. And when that power shifts, you’re off the window.”

Kidjo’s message serves as a timely reminder for artists across Africa and beyond to prioritize authenticity and social impact over fleeting political favor.

Her words highlight the delicate balance between art and politics — and the enduring power of music when it speaks truth, not propaganda.
